THE POETRY OF ACTING PART 4: EMBODIED VOICE

An interdisciplinary laboratory on the voice for professional artists in the performing arts.
In our laboratory, we will work practically with the speaking and singing voice in relation to breathing, movement and space applied on texts and poems by Robert Desnos.

The workshop is led by LumparLab Theatre Association in collaboration with Associazione Vera Stasi. The teachers are Grete Sneltvedt (AX) and Silvana Barbarini (IT).

LABORATORY RESEARCH
The Embodied Voice is the fourth part of a series of six laboratories on the theme THE POETRY OF ACTING. You are welcome to take part in individual laboratories.

In the research of interplay between voice and body we investigate different steps from the reading to the staging, starting from actors’ training through voice and movement:

– breathing as a basis on which to expand voice and body possibilities
– training techniques that through vocal and physical awareness affect the practical work on stage
– explore the vocal possibilities of the text and take creative risks in a supportive environment
– explore the movement of energy from the head to the body, with a high-level technique and discover a connection to the emotional centre
– investigate all the further steps (individual gestures, space interactions, group landscapes) starting from deep physical awareness research on the interplay between voice and body

The laboratory provides an opportunity to connect with other stage artists and to create networks.

Why work on the voice in relation to movement, time and space?
The human being is always present in the art of acting, physically and concretely, with a resonating, vibrating voice in a living body. The art of acting deals with what it means to exist.

The work of an actor deals with all aspects of human existence: loneliness and togetherness in sorrow, joy, hatred, love, memory and presence. Our own existence becomes the material, the starting point for our search to understand and relate to others and in finding ways of expressing this.

Human life revolves around the voice, around our desire and need to speak and communicate. A grounded voice awakens the body as it arises from breathing, muscular activity, attentive listening and from the body’s conscious attempt to respond to what we experience, in ourselves and in our surroundings.

We strive to ground the body-voice so that the spoken words can be made from flesh and blood. In acting, we speak about “giving voice to” and “making oneself heard” and this will be of key importance during the workshop. Equally important will be awareness of sound, of listening to and hearing ourselves and others.

To access one’s own voice potential, one needs technical training and methods to acquire useful tools to open the voice through freedom, control and responsiveness. Our goal is to connect the voice, text, body, movement and space in a common texture and to strengthen the cooperation between different professions in stage art.

SESSIONS
We work mornings and afternoons. During the morning sessions, we will concentrate on training and technical work on voice and movement. The preparatory work will then be applied to texts that will be transformed to monologues/scenes in the afternoon and evening.

We work in groups, pairs and individually with one or two teachers present. An opportunity will be given to each individual to apply the training and technical work from the morning session on their own work.

The two teachers have personal experience in what they teach, and they work together and individually from different point of views and disciplines, with a common goal of developing the poetry of acting:

Grete (performing arts pedagogue) will base her work on the training and experiences she has received in her work with Nadine George and her technique. The voice is the technical tool that creates the connection between sound, feeling and words, says Nadine George, and her technique enables the actor to get in touch with this connection.

The training is built up in steps going from partner and group work with breathing exercises, moving on to the voice and exploring different sound qualities – male and female – followed by individual work.

This leads directly into work on texts by Desnos where we apply “Full voice”. This method offers space in the body for vibrations for the actor to speak with full power engaging the whole body. Prime aspects of the training focus on breathing, gravity, relaxation and direction. The sounds made are coloured by inner body experiences connected with technical tools.

Silvana (dancer/choreographer) will work with a physical warming up, based on connections between body and mind. Working with developmental patterns and exploring different body systems (the muscles, the skeleton, the fluids) allows us to reach a state of centring and a sense of ease within ourselves and with others. The grounding and the freedom gained through the training gives richness and flow to movement and actor’s energy.

The body awareness created during the process offers a good basis for working on voice-movement.

Afternoon improvisations will delve more deeply into the possibility to approach different characters changing the focus in our body-mind rich universe and will explore relations between words and actions in the space.

Valeria Tumasolo will document the work on photo and video. This will be used to further development and reference.

IMPRESSIONS ON RAVN

Gloriya Petrova 1 B
The RAVN show was on Saturday, and it was at super cinema, we went in and we removed the shoes then we entered a room that had a circle in the center where inside we had to sit. I was very impressed fom the actress who sang very well and in the manner in which she played the parts, with great courage and enthusiasm, and I also liked the shadows; the actress‘s name was Gretel and she was very nice. In the end her friend named Eva Maria was very good in cutting out figures without even draw them. She also showed us how to do some animals and I really liked it.

Andrea Copponi
The
1st and 2nd B we went to see a show named Ravn to Supercinema. I’ve been impressed by the story of the duck and I liked the ending when EVA MARIA made for us scraps to make shadows, and she had the generosity to give them to some of us, as a gift.

One Saturday we went to
see at SUPERCINEMA RAVN in ENGLISH. I was struck by how it was played; actresses were GRETE and EVA MARIA and at the end EVA MARIA has cut the figures of a lion, a bear and a chicken and have given them to some children. For all this reasons I liked it.

Federico Pieri 1 B
Saturday 15 at Supercinema we saw a beautiful show named RAVN. I was very impressed with the idea of doing a show around us especially when in the final Evamaria made fabulous clippings. And when the show was over, I was impressed

Matthew Ercoloni 1 B
One Saturday we went to see a performance at Supercinema in English; the thing that struck me the most was when Grete sang as she went around with a wheelchair, the actress was very good and sometimes came among us that we were in a circle. The show was almost over and Eva Maria showed us figures with their shadows. Anyway I liked the show.

Gaia Piergiovanni
My name is
Gaia Piergiovanni and I attend the first level of secondary school, I’m exactly in the 1 B class. The show was held Saturday at Supercinema. I really enjoyed it and the scene that struck me the most has been when the duck was dead. The actress was very nice and even though she had many roles to represent, she acted always very well. Her voice was fantastic. Finally a lady called Eva Maria made for us beautiful clippings. Another thing that struck me was Lucy, the girl disappearing into the wall.

Saturday at SUPER CINEMA
I loved the show, especially its significance. Grete and Eva Maria were very clever; it was fun when mrs Eva Maria was cutting for us figures to be projected figures on the wall. The part that I liked most was the beginning when Grete sang that wonderful song.

THE SHOW OF RAVN TOOK PLACE ON SATURDAY AT TUSCANIA’S SUPERCINEMA; ALL WAS HAPPENING AROUND A CIRCLE INSIDE WHERE WE WERE SEATED. BEFORE ENTERING WE REMOVED THE SHOES. I’VE BEEN IMPRESSED ESPECIALLY BY THE CHANGE FROM ONE ANOTHER HISTORY IN LITTLE TIME. AS FOR ME THE ACTRESS WAS VERY BRAVA AND OFTEN EVEN IF YOU DID NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT SHE WAS SAYING, YOU COULD UNDERSTAND THE MEANING FROM WHAT SHE WAS DOING. IN THE END EVAMARIA HAS BEEN CUTTING SHADOWS. THIS SHOW HAS BEEN VERY CHARMING AND I SHOULD LIKE TO SEE IT AGAIN

They made us get into a circle and the show was taking place all around us! The thing that struck me was when Eva Maria showed us her embroideries. The actress Grete sang beautifully! This show is fantastic the most beautiful ever seen!

Marta 1B
Saturday we went to the super movie theater to see the show RAVN”. The actress was called GRETE, she was very good and had a beautiful voice, and yet the other actress was called EVA MARIA and, at the end of the show, some of us asked for a shadow and she designed animals with a cardboard and scissors. The show I really enjoyed it, it was interesting, I particularly liked the cat PUSPUS”. Marta

Matteo Loreti 1B
That Saturday was a bit boring because I didn’t enjoyed it. The part I liked the most was when Grete came within the circle where 1st and 2nd B were inside without shoes and sitting on the ground. The part that I liked so much was when Eva Maria did the shadows with colored paper.

Omar Fazzini 1B
This Saturday at supercinema we were all around a circle. I’ve been impressed from the part where the girl spoke of the adventures of the father. The actress was very good and very energetic and had a beautiful voice. The final for me was a little less fun, but I liked the play.

Matteo Pasquarelli 1B
A Saturday with the English teacher we went to see Ravn at the theater Supercinema. We went with the bus and then we stepped inside. I’ve been impressed especially from the way we were stuffed: we were sitting, barefoot, on the ground in a circle. Then I’ve been impressed from Grete’ s voice changes, and from Evamaria ‘s lights: with a few things, but surprising,.

Chiara Papacchini 1B
Saturday we went to see a show at Tuscania’ supercinema. It was a strange sight because the actress Grete, very good, was walking around, while we were sitting in a big circle. Of this film I particularly liked the part when Lucy disappeared into the wall and after a while all the children came out of the wall. Another part that I liked is the final and then when another actress, always very good, Eva Maria has cut out the figures from a simple black cardboard. I want to say that Ravn is one of my favorite shows

Pietro Moretti 1B
One Saturday together with my class we went to the theatre Super Cinema. When we entered we were asked to remove our shoes and sit on the ground inside a circle. Of the show, more than all the other things, the shadows struck me. About the actress, Grete, I can only say that she was very good and she was good both to interpret all the roles and ..

Mrs. Eva Maria has cut beautiful figures that gave us. In my opinion the show RAVN was the most beautiful of my life

Sara Astolfi 1B
Saturday with my class I went to the Super Cinema Theatre located inside the historic centre of Tuscania. What struck me most of all was the circle where we were asked to sit barefoot. In addition to the actress who was called Grete” there was another woman named Eva Mariatalented

in cutting from a the cardstock without drawing animals such as elephants and horses

Giacomo Crocetti 1B
My class and I went to see the show RAVN at Super Cinema. It was on Saturday, October 15. We were in a dark room in a red circle. Before entering the room we had removed our shoes, otherwise we could have dirty around, and then we went to sit inside the circle. The thing that struck me the most was when a lady named Eva Maria, in less than a minute did the silhouettes of animals, with only paper and scissors. The actress was named Grete and she was very good!! The end I imagined could have been different, but the show was beautiful.

THAT IMPRESSED THE DINOSAUR WE HAVE ON THE GROUND WITH NO SHOES AND ALSO VERY LARGE CIRCLE WITH LION WITH FLOWERS ON EARTH AND ALSO THE LETTERS: I LIKED ALL CRISTIAN

Philip Mezzera 1B
One Saturday, a few weeks ago I and class 1 B went to Supercinema. We sat on the floor, without shoes. This idea I liked a lot, I was struck, in the hour of the show I tried very intense emotions, it was like teletransfer to another dimension, a dimension of enchanted stories, it seemed really to be in the world told by the show. The shadows seemed true, they were moving.
. ………………………………………………………………………
had any problem, I understood the story well, I liked when the actress approached us and talked to us and also the projections of shadows were perfect. The actress (Grete) I think is a fantastic person, educated, kind, and I really enjoyed talking with her, she seemed kind and nice, and I was fantastically amazed from her voice that was beautiful, intonatissima. I make many compliments to Eva Maria, the lady who made us fly, together with Grete, in the world of RAVN and I was surprised from her speedness and her skillness in cutting shadows of animals or whatever and the generosity to give them to us as a gift. In short, at the end Grete and Eva Maria surprised me and this was one of the best shows that I attended.

Katia Odorico, teacher class  1A
The show Ravn has really been a good experience! More than a show, in fact, it has been an experience. Sitting on the floor, without shoes, in a circle, in a theatre that is not a theatre but an old cinema like Tornatore’s “new paradise cinema “.

Among the boys, curious and happy, some of them could understand more and  I saw those who were trying not to miss a single gesture to understand everything. Very strong the story of the girl who is hiding in the wall, some of them are as Lussi and suffer much. The actress, very good with an impressive voice, was transforming from an old man to a child with a delicacy and an impressive professionalism.

What to say.. Beautiful !

We wait for you next year.
